News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated annually on April 7.

This year's theme "Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Everyone, Everywhere" means ensuring that everyone no matter where they live or who they are can access essential quality health services without facing financial hardship.

It was in 1948, the WHO held the First World Health Assembly.

WHO statistics show that at least half the world's people today don't receive the essential health services they need.

According to him, more than 90 per cent of Nigerians can hardly afford payment for their health needs and lack access to the NHlS scheme.

"No one should get sick and die just because they are poor, or because they can not access the health service they need", said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a message ahead of the annual April 7 observance, which is the foundation day of the now 70 year old UN's health agency.

"Health is a human right".

The CEO, who decried incessant strike in the health sector, attributed it to poor remuneration among others.

According to the 2014-2015 figures, 2.43% of India's GDP comes from the medical expenses spent by patients amounting to Rs 3,02,425 crore whereas government only spends 1.1% of GDP on the health sector, which amounts to Rs 1,39,949 crore, that is only 29% of India's total health expense.

Countries that invest in Universal Health Coverage (UHC) make a sound investment in their human capital.

Countries in the Region have committed to monitor who is not being covered by health services and why, and review annually progress on UHC and SDG3 health goal until 2030.

UHC is feasible. Some countries have made great progress. We all know that some resources and services like immunisation are available for free but they are not been enjoyed by the people because they don't even know about them.

Nearly 100 million people are being pushed into extreme poverty, forced to survive on just $1.90 or less a day, because they have to pay for health services out of their own pockets. If countries are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target, one billion more people need to benefit from Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2023.
