  • Animator, Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata dies at 82

After beginning his career at Toei Animation in 1959, Takahata went on to co-found Studio Ghibli, one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world, with his longtime collaborator Hayao Miyazaki in 1985.

The 1988 film is "Grave of the Fireflies", a haunting tale of young siblings trying to survive the bombing of Japan at the end of World War II. Takahata was reportedly suffering from lung cancer.

Miyazaki also served as a producer on early Miyazaki works such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Castle in the Sky (1986).

Takahata knew his work, using floating sketches, stood as a challenge to Hollywood's computer-generated cartoons.

The style of Takahata's output is enduring and far-reaching, crafting light and heart-warming comic-strip style works like My Neighbours the Yamadas, to the delicate paint-like strokes of Kaguya.

Though they had their differences over the years, both Takahata and Miyazaki had a penchant for telling stories about strong-willed girls and women. His last film, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, based on a Japanese folktale, was nominated for a 2015 Oscar for best animation feature, although it did not win.

Takahata's films featured a slew of complex female characters. Though at occasions Takahata has denied this praise, but critics like Roger Ebert call this movie as a classic example of an anti-war film and easily be categorised under the list of greatest war films ever to be made.

All his stories, he said, held the message of urging everyone to live life to the fullest, to be all they can be, not bogged down by petty concerns like money and prestige.

"It's very regrettable", broadcaster NHK quoted Toshio Suzuki, of Studio Ghibli, as saying.

"This earth is a good place, not because there is eternity". Details were still undecided. "There was so much more he wanted to do", Suzuki said.
