  • Up to 5m Saks and Lord & Taylor customers at risk after data breach

The retail brands' Canada-based parent company, Hudson's Bay, yesterday announced the breach and said it was taking steps to contain the attack.

The company has assured affected customers that theywill not be liable for fraudulent charges that may result from this matter, and that they will be offered free identity protection services, including credit and web monitoring. There's also no indication that Social Security or Social Insurance numbers, driver's license numbers or PINs have been affected, it said.

Hudson's Bay Company said it will notify customers as it gets more information.

Gemini researchers said that the entire network of Lord & Taylor was compromised along with 83 stores of Saks Fith Avenue. Gemini Advisory expects all of them become available "in the coming months". As many as 5 million users' credit cards may be compromised, and the breach may still be ongoing as of time of writing.

Let the representative know you're concerned about the data breach and ask them to cancel your current card number and issue you a new one.

Hudson's Bay Company, which acquired Saks and brought the US luxury retailer to Canada five years ago, says personal credit card information from various Saks stores were exposed.

Gemini Advisory believes the hackers behind this incident were also behind past data breaches that affected Whole Foods, Chipotle, Omni Hotels and Resorts and Trump Hotels.

Chorine urged any consumers who had shopped at Saks Fifth Avenue or Lord & Taylor stores in the past year to take preventative measures against fraud.

The Fin7 hacking group claims it has lifted around five million bank cards from those who made purchase at the upscale clothing store's brick and mortar locations.

Many shoppers, whether they were impacted by the breach or not, are obviously concerned.

Dmitry Chorine, the co-founder of Gemini Advisory, said his firm works to improve response to data breaches by analyzing stolen data that appears on the so-called dark web.

Only a limited part of the five million records has been offered for sale so far, approximately 35,000 records from Saks Fifth Avenue and 90,000 records from Lord & Taylor. Close to 148 million consumers in the US had personal info stolen, including driver's licenses, as part of last year's breach of Equifax the credit-rating company.
