Putin White House summit? Maybe

  • US President Donald Trump has invited Vladimir Putin to the White House, says Kremlin

Trump, who has been accused of cozying up to Putin, and whose presidential campaign is under investigation over Russian hacking, also said it "would be a good thing, not a bad thing", if the United States got along with Russia.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov also said Trump floated the idea of hosting Putin for talks at the White House.

Tensions between the United States and Russia have only escalated in the two weeks since that call, with Trump expelling 60 Russian diplomats the USA believes were intelligence agents in response to Russia's alleged use of a nerve agent to poison a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom.

Rolling out a welcome for Putin in the White House, rather than at a neutral location, could anger Trump's domestic critics, who accuse Russian Federation of hostile acts against Western countries, including the United States.

The Kremlin says Mr Trump invited the Russian leader to the White House.

If it happens, Putin would be getting the honor of an Oval Office tete-a-tete for the first time since he met President George W. Bush at the White House in 2005.

The Kremlin says the invitation was extended during the same March 20 phone call in which Mr Trump congratulated Mr Putin on his re-election victory after being explicitly warned not to.

"We want to believe that the discussions (on a proposed summit) will begin", Ushakov said. Those moves were in retaliation to Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and the recent poison attack on an ex-Russian spy in London. Russian Federation denies it was responsible for the attack, and responded to the USA move by expelling US diplomats and closing a US consulate.

McFaul said he feared that Trump "thinks that a good meeting with Putin is the objective of his foreign policy with Russian Federation".

In calling Mr Putin, Mr Trump ignored the explicit advice of his national security advisers.

Kersti Kaljulaid of Estonia, Dalia Grybauskaite of Lithuania, and Raimonds Vejonis of Latvia are anxious about the prospect of Russian Federation seeking to spread its influence throughout the region, and went to the White House as a group to seek more military assistance from the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Mr Trump has met Mr Putin twice as President, at the G20 summit in Germany past year and briefly at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Vietnam in November.

Putin has been to other parts of the US frequently in recent years, including a visit to the Bush family compound in Maine.

Putin, who was president of Russian Federation once before, visited the White House in 2005, when Bush welcomed him in the East Room as "my friend". Putin's meetings with Obama occurred at global summits and along the sidelines of the United Nations gathering in NY.
