IL health officials have issued a warning about a disturbing new symptom of synthetic marijuana: severe bleeding. Reports of the symptom began March 10, the Illinois Department of Public Health confirms.

No deaths have been reported so far, and the situation is still being investigated, said Arnold.

"This bleeding is not expected, at least in such a significant population so quickly", Dr. Melissa Millewich, an emergency room physician at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, told the Chicago Tribune.

Synthetic cannabis is human-made to simulate the effects of marijuana, they are commonly sprayed on dried plants or consumed through E-cigarettes.

The health department was still trying to identify common products in the cannabinoids and determine where they originated. "The recent cases of severe bleeding are evidence of the harm synthetic cannabinoids can cause", Shah added.

Two cases have been recorded in IN, more in IL.

"The health effect from these substances can be unpredictable and very harmful even to the point of producing life threatening effects", says Pontones.

Besides bleeding from the ears and eyes, patients also vomited blood, suffered nosebleeds, saw blood in their urine and women bled heavier than normal during their menstrual cycle. They're urging anyone who bought synthetic-cannabinoid products in the last month to refrain from using them.

Synthetic cannabinoids are commonly referred to as "K2", "Spice," or "Black Mamba".

Health officials encourage anyone who purchased this drug there not to use it and go to the emergency department if they are having ill effects.

Synthetic cannabinoids fall into a category of drugs called new psychoactive substances, which are unregulated mind-altering substances that are newly available on the market and meant to cause the same effects as illegal drugs, according to IDPH.

Anyone with a negative reaction should call 911 immediately.
