Rain, snow postpones NASCAR race at Martinsville

  • Martin Truex Jr. celebrates after winning the NASCAR 400 mile auto race Sunday

Bowyer led a race-high 215 of 500 laps in the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 Ford, and came across the finish line 1.146 seconds ahead of Kyle Busch in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Toyota.

"I wanted that damn clock", Bowyer said.

Bowyer had ample reason to start the party early, before he got to the frontstretch for a traditional smoke show. Everybody knows a year ago was a lot of panic on my behalf.

"We just tried to maintain and keep ourselves in the right position, in the right spots all day long on the long runs and save our stuff as much as we could to see if we couldn't mount a charge late in the going", Busch said.

"Yeah, I'm going to be watching in my basement", he smiled. "That would be a safer measure for me right now - jump in whatever ambulance is here and beg them to take me to a hospital".

He thanked Gene Haas and Stewart for bringing him to SHR.

"I told him [Cash] this morning, I was like, 'Dammit, we've got to get a picture in Victory Lane". "It's been a long time". However, he was a new man on Monday while sitting in control for the majority of the final stage.

Ryan Blaney has won the second stage of Monday's Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway. Bowyer's crew chief, Mike Bugarewicz, estimated that Bowyer would have had to pit under green in about 10 laps because the pit crew had failed to fill the entire gas tank on his previous stop.

That contact came moments before the only non-competition caution of the race after Daytona 500 victor Austin Dillon's Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet nudged Jamie McMurray's Ganassi Chevrolet into a spin and contact with the outside wall. "That changes your thought process and your reasoning for racing". Cup races here average 13 caution flags. A competition caution on lap 50 divided this first stage. Bowyer's victory was his first driving for SHR. Hamlin led 111 laps early, claimed the first stage victory and, like Blaney, collected a playoff point.

The victory marked Bowyer's sixth top five in 25 starts at the paper-clip-shaped speedway.

The race had been moved bumped to Monday after snowy weather on Sunday; it was the first snowed-out race for NASCAR's premiere series since 1993. Piles of dirty snow were evident against walls outside the racing surface, and areas in shadow outside the track were still snow-covered, but most of the grass parking lots at the track were open.

Momentum changes quickly enough in the NASCAR Cup Series that this realization isn't a shock., but it's still a bit startling what SHR has been through to get to this point.
