Is Mexico still paying for Donald Trump's border wall?

  • President Donald Trump has privately floated the idea of funding construction of a border wall with Mexico through the US military budget in conversations with advisers two sources confirmed to CNN Tuesday

In last week's budget, US$1.6 billion (NZ$2.2 billion) of United States taxpayer money was included, which Trump said was a down payment on the wall.

After floating the notion to several advisers last week, he told House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) that the military should pay for the wall, according to three people familiar with the meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence.

Congress would likely need to redirect money from the current Defense budget to the wall project, which is unlikely to happen, according to the Post report.

The president signed a $1.3 trillion spending bill that included a massive military funding increase last week, despite his unhappiness with the amount of money it put toward border security.

The border wall was one of the chief promises from Donald Trump while he was on the 2016 campaign trail, with Trump saying he planned to build a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border and that he would make Mexico pay for it.

So far, government funds have only been allocated to fencing along the border, but no new wall is now being built.

Some people close to the president have also suggested creating a GoFundMe campaign that Trump could use to raise money from the public to fund construction.

"National defense is a very important two words", Trump said during a signing ceremony on Friday. The president's comments were first reported by the Washington Post.

On Sunday, President Deals tweeted "Build Wall through M!" But Gallego argued it was needed as a pre-emptive measure since Trump could look to Defense Department coffers when he had trouble getting Mexico to pay for the wall, as he promised. But administration officials can not even say if such an official request is being crafted. During his campaign, Trump spoke vehemently against illegal immigration and proposed a plan on how to end immigrants crossing the border illegally. "First Mexico was supposed to pay for it, then USA taxpayers, and now our men and women in uniform?" The president initially requested $18 billion in funding for the wall. But she did say Trump will work with the White House counsel's office to ensure any actions on border wall funding is legal and within his executive authorities.

During a September trip to Mexico, Mattis emphasized that US-Mexican military ties were strong and that the two countries shared common concerns.

"I can't get get into the specifics of that at this point, but I can tell you the continuation of building the wall is ongoing and we're going to continue to move forward in that process", Sanders said.
