  • Multiple suspicious packages sent to DC-area military and intelligence installations

Packages containing explosive materials were sent to four military installations around Washington, D.C., according to multiple media reports.

Another Army spokesman confirmed a suspicious package incident at Fort Belvoir and said that package has been rendered safe.

An NBC News report also indicated that similar suspicious packages were located at a processing facility that handles mail intended for the White House. The packages sent to Anacostia-Bolling and the naval warfare center did not contain explosives, according to CBS News.

Officials said black powder was discovered in at least one package along with a fuse, but it was neutralized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The building was evacuated and later cleared around 1:15pm.

Officials previously said they were looking at more than five locations in the area where the packages were received, including the White House and Central Intelligence Agency mail facilities located at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, officials told Fox News.

Williams said "It's obvious they were on to this person quite quickly", adding that authorities had some indication of their suspicions Monday evening.

Williams said some of the packages were accompanied by what investigators told him were "rambling and disturbing" notes, and at least two of them had explosive material in them.

One of those packages contained liquid in a vial and a circuit board, according to law enforcement officials. A U.S. official said a Naval Support Facility in Dahlgren, Virginia, also received a suspicious package and that the FBI is leading the investigation.

Defense Department spokeswoman Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza said they are aware of the situation and it is being investigated.

It is possible that further packages were mailed to additional mail processing facilities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
