New York Yankees: Bird's Wings Get Clipped Again

Yankees first baseman Greg Bird has been scratched from the starting lineup because of a sore right foot. After battling two straight years of injuries, Bird was planned to be penciled right in the middle of the potent Yankees lineup.

ATLANTA (AP) - Oft-injured New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will need surgery on his ailing right ankle and could be sidelined for almost two months.

After undergoing an MRI and a CT Scan the team learned that Bird had inflammation in that ankle.

With Bird injured, the Yankees will turn to Tyler Austin and Neil Walker to play first base. Following his semi-breakout 2015 Major League Baseball serving size (11 HR in 46 games), he underwent right shoulder surgery to fix a torn labrum, keeping him out the entire 2016 season.

If the Stanton call doesn't "work", it will not be the first time Sterling has had to shift gears.

"I'm just excited to be part of this team", Austin said "You never want to see a guy go down".

Even though he struggled at the plate throughout spring training, Bird was healthy, by all accounts.

Though there's been some thought that Bird might have been trying to manage the pain for days, or even weeks, before finally mentioning something Friday, Tehrany said, "In my experience, it's not odd at all".

Ellsbury played his first six-plus seasons with the Boston Red Sox before signing a seven-year, $153 million deal with the Yankees following the 2013 campaign.

Austin gives the Yankees a right-handed complement to Walker with more power.

"In the grand scheme of things", the manager said, "hopefully we do look back and it's a short-term bump in the road and we can get him back for good".
