Militants linked to al-Qaida unleash deadly car bombings in Somalia

  • Deadly Car Bomb Blast Rocks Somalia's Capital Mogadishu

Somali-based group of Al Shabaab has immediately claimed the responsibility for Sunday's explosion in the capital of Mogadishu.

A suicide vehicle bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint near Somalia's parliament and interior ministry in the capital Mogadishu on Sunday, and the city's ambulance service said three people had been killed, Reuters reported. The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group carries out frequent bombings and other attacks in Mogadishu in a campaign to topple Somalia's Western-backed federal government.

Mogadishu's mayor, Mr Abdirahman Omar Osman, also known as Yariisow, condemned the attacks, saying, "These terror acts will not stop us".

Witnesses reported hearing a "huge" blast, and seeing at least four bodies on the road along with several cars and motorbikes burning and emergency vehicles at the scene.

"There was a heavy blast here and the number of casualties we have is so far 14 killed and a number of others wounded", said Abdiazis Ali Ibrahim, a security ministry spokesman.

The auto bomb was detonated at a checkpoint after soldiers intercepted and stopped a suspicious vehicle, senior police Capt. Mohamed Hussein told The Associated Press. Among the dead were two soldiers, officials said.

Somalia suffered one of its deadliest attacks in October, when a double truck bombing killed 512 people.

Thursday's blast comes nearly exactly a month after two auto bomb explosions in Mogadishu shattered a months-long period of calm in the city, killing at least 21 people.

The United States has also stepped up efforts in the fight against al-Shabab, having carried out dozens of drone strikes on jihadi targets in the region over the past year.
