Trump signs spending bill, blasts Congress

25 March, 2018, 00:51 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Democrat of New York and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi speak about the Omnibus budget deal during a press conference on Thursday

Paul wanted to read through the bill first. "Who wants to trust a comprehensive immigration deal and put a lot of time and effort into it, only to see it at the eleventh hour derailed because, I don't know, he turns on Fox News and somebody criticizes it?"

While calling it a "ridiculous situation", Trump said the spending plan was important because it increases money for the military. I'm not going to do it again.

Some 690,000 immigrants are registered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that Trump ended on March 5. He rejected every single one of them.

But Trump's the one who rescinded DACA upon entering office.

DACA recipients are undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.

Conservatives and deficit hawks in Trump's party had panned the bill because of its spending increases. But Trump says the permitted work will begin "literally on Monday".

He also marveled at cash earmarked for the country's nuclear missile program. Most importantly, got $700 Billion to rebuild our Military, $716 Billion next year.most ever.

The spending package includes $1.6bn for Mr Trump's long-promised border wall with Mexico.

It includes a 9% budget increase for the US National Park Service to address a fix backlog that advocates say are urgently needed.

The government faces a midnight shutdown if a spending bill is not signed. In other words, this isn't money for Trump's big, lovely wall.

The package provides $1.6 billion for building new sections of wall and replacing older sections. And it comes with a lot of strings attached; most of the funding will have to go toward repairing existing fencing or toward double fencing where barriers already exist.

There is plenty of reason to doubt whether Trump's threat is credible.

He also called on Congress to give him "line-item veto" powers for all government spending bills, which the US Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional in 1998.

At the White House, many aides were caught by surprise by the veto threat and were scrambling for answers.

"Nobody read it", Trump said. "That is NOT Making America Great Again", Leahy said.

President Trump speaks with Vice President Pence and Defense Secretary Mattis at his side.

The omnibus spending bill was supposed to be an antidote to the stopgap measures Congress has been forced to pass - five in this fiscal year alone - to keep government temporarily running amid partisan fiscal disputes.

But action stalled in the Senate, as conservatives ran the clock in protest.

Trump repeatedly invoked the need to rebuild the USA armed forces to defend his signing of a bill that he was unhappy with. The House and Senate would require two-thirds of lawmakers to do so.

The House easily approved the spending package Thursday, 256-167, a bipartisan tally that underscored the popularity of the compromise, which funds the government through September.

"We had no choice but to fund our military", he said.

The Trump administration has been battling with Democrats over these protections since past year.

Still, Democrats were beyond pleased with the bill Friday.
