Two people were killed when a bomb exploded under a auto in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Saturday in what appeared to be an assassination attempt on the city's security chief, state media reported. Egypt's interior ministry and army have tightened security ahead of the elections, which will be held Monday through Wednesday.

Black smoke was seen rising above the site of the attack on Al-Moaskar Al-Romani street, near a police station.

State news agency MENA quoted al-Nemr as saying that two people, a policeman and a driver, were killed in the blast.

Investigators say a bomb placed underneath the auto went off when the security chief drove by, raising speculation that it was targeting the official.

Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek ordered an "urgent and wide inquiry".

The bombing comes just days before President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi faces the head of the Ghad Party Moussa Moustafa Moussa in the presidential election. Four military personnel are said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bomb.

The militants of Ansar Beit al-Maddis have killed hundreds of soldiers, policemen and civilians, mainly in its North Sinai stronghold but also elsewhere in Egypt.

IS claimed the 2015 bombing of a Russian airliner carrying tourists from the South Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, which killed all 224 people on board.
