Trump congratulates Vladimir Putin on winning presidential election

  • President Vladimir Putin has thanked all people after winning a landslide victory in the presidential election in which he garnered about 77% of the votes

US Senator John McCain criticised Mr Trump over the call.

The security briefing said in all capital letters, "DO NOT CONGRATULATE" Putin, but Trump called on his own to offer congratulations to the Russian president.

Trump congratulated President Putin on his March 18 re-election and emphasised the importance of denuclearising the Korean Peninsula, said a readout of the phone call.

Tensions between the Moscow and the West continues to mount amid worldwide concern over a nerve gas attack on a former Russian double agent living in England and questions about meddling in elections and attempting to hack infrastructure in the U.S.

Mr Ryan, who has supported the special counsel probe of Russian election meddling, did not elaborate on the assurances.

Trump spoke today with President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation. "An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections", a statement issued by his office read.

Other Western leaders also called to congratulate Putin. Relations between the two countries instead have remained tense amid the allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the investigations of whether there was collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia.

The Kremlin noted that "in general, the conversation was constructive and businesslike and focused on overcoming the problems that have accumulated in Russian-US relations".

The White House had earlier indicated that no call with Putin was planned and the Russian leader played down talk of a rift. The election was tainted by reports of voting irregularities.

The statement says they also expressed satisfaction with the apparent easing of tensions over North Korea's weapons program.

The two leaders discussed the state of bilateral relations and resolved to continue dialogue about mutual national security priorities and challenges. Trump has said there was no collusion between his presidential campaign and Russians.

In a statement about the call between the two leaders, the Kremlin described diplomatic problems facing Russian Federation and the US and confirmed Putin's intent to meet with Trump.

Russian Federation is also facing huge pressure from Britain and its allies to explain how its former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned on British soil with a nerve agent the United Kingdom says is Soviet-designed.

"I think probably we'll be seeing President Putin in the not-too-distant future", he said.

"The United States once again calls for free and fair elections and stands with the people of Venezuela in their quest to restore their country to a full and prosperous democracy", Trump said at the time.

Sanders declined to pass judgment on those elections Monday.
