Alzheimer's Treatment Costs Are Rising, As Are Associated Deaths, But Why?

An estimated 5.7 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia in 2018, including 71,000 in Kentucky.

Dementia costs the United Kingdom economy £26 billion annually, with over 80 percent of this cost carried by social and informal care, but current cost appraisal methods do not take the full savings in those areas into account.

Barring the development of medical breakthroughs, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's dementia may almost triple from 5.5 million to 13.8 million by 2050.

"Katzman claimed Alzheimer's was the fourth largest disease killer in the U.S.at a time when it wasn't even considered in any such category", Ingram explained.

The report indicates the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to rise 18 percent by 2025.

While deaths from other major causes continue to decline, Alzheimer's deaths have more than doubled, rising 123 percent between 2000 and 2015.

It is also updated that by 2050, the total cost for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease is going to get more than $1.1 trillion.

Every 65 seconds someone in the US develops Alzheimer's disease, according to a recent study by the Alzheimer's Association.

The diagnosis cases are such strong that in every 65 seconds, some in the USA gets diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia.

Betanin, the compound that gives beets their distinctive red color could slow down the effects of Alzheimer's disease - the world's leading type of dementia.

About one in three caregivers (34 percent) is age 65 or older. Nearly two thirds of Americans with the disease are women.

But why is the disease killing people more than ever before? The report by the Chicago-based Alzheimer's Association estimates that 5.5 million Americans age 65 and older are now living with the disease, 220,000 of them in IL alone.

Care Minister Caroline Dinenage said the report showed "the scale of the challenge dementia presents not only to individuals and their families but to wider society". Of that amount, $186 billion is the cost to Medicare and Medicaid, and $60 billion is for out-of-pocket costs, the report found.

A successful treatment for Alzheimer's would cost the NHS up to £9.4 billion a year and planning for it must start now, experts say.

"Using mass spectrometry, we found that tau is truncated in CSF in healthy people and Alzheimer's patients", says Nicolas Barthélemy, a member of the Bateman lab and the other co-first author. "The disease is better managed, there are fewer complications from other chronic conditions, and unnecessary hospitalizations are avoided".

For the millions of us who are affected, the passage of BOLD ultimately will make Alzheimer's an ever-increasing priority, creating the specialized care that is needed.

The Alzheimer's Association commissioned researchers at Precision Health Economics to study the potential savings of obtaining an earlier diagnosis.
