  • Bomb Destined For Austin Explodes At FedEx Facility Near San Antonio

The facility is just northeast of San Antonio and officials are investigating to see if this latest incident is connected to the four recent explosions in Austin.

Four bombs have exploded in Austin, Texas, this month, killing two and injuring several others.

Police dispatched a hazardous materials team to the FedEx ground delivery facility, which is located in the 4100 block of McKinney Falls Parkway in southeast Austin.

Schertz Police said the package was in the sorting area of the facility when it went off.

Winston said because of the previous suspicious package calls in Austin that killed two people and injured others, the agencies would remain on scene as a precautionary measure.

Austin Police Officers are investigating a suspicious package at the FedEx building near the Austin Bergstrom International Airport. One worker reported ringing in her ears. "She was treated and released". I want to continue to remind our community to pay close attention to any suspicious device whether it be a package, a bag, a backpack or anything that looks out of place, do not approach it. Call 9-1-1 immediately. They said bomber used a tripwire in Sunday's attack. Authorities roped off a large area around the shopping center in the enclave of Sunset Valley. The two men who were injured were said to be either riding their bikes or pushing them when the bomb was detonated.

More than 350 special agents assigned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as ATF agents and forensic investigators in Quantico, Virginia, are on the Austin case.

While the victims in the latest incident have not been identified, the Associated Press spoke to a man who says one of the victims is his grandson.

Former ATF bomb specialist Tina Sherrow worked on dozens of bombing cases and says with each explosion investigators collect a wealth of physical evidence.

"It was so dark they couldn't tell, and they tripped", Grote said.

"This is a race against time to find him before he bombs again", Burton said.

Despite bombing tactics that have now shifted, investigators have repeated prior warnings about not touching unexpected packages and urged people to be wary of any stray object left in public.

"It's creepy", said Erin Mays, 33.

In Washington, President Donald Trump said the assailant behind the bombing is "very sick".

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told Austin residents to be "very cautious, obviously", and to follow the guidance of local authorities. "We have intel research specialists", Frank Ortega, acting assistant special agent in charge of the San Antonio ATF office, told reporters.

Police originally pointed to possible hate crimes, but the victims have now been black, Hispanic and white and from different parts of the city.

It's the fifth explosion of a device either in Austin or meant to be delivered to the city.

While the first three bombings all occurred east of Interstate 35, a section of town that tends to be more heavily minority and less affluent, Sunday's was west of the highway.

"As each tip comes in, it gets assigned to either a team of Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, ATF agents or Austin Police detectives to do follow-up work on", he said.

"There were nails and metals in the bomb".

"It was a thin wire or filament, kind of like fishing line", he said.

Police also are considering a rhyme or reason to the targets.
