School Officials Wanted Florida Gunman Committed Long Before a Massacre

20 March, 2018, 04:19 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • Nikolas Cruz is lead out of the courtroom after an arraignment hearing at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale Fla. Wednesday

Documents do not show that Cruz was ever committed, nor is it known why Peterson did not act on his own recommendation.

Such an involuntary commitment would also have been a high obstacle if not a complete barrier to legally obtaining a firearm, such as the AR-15 rifle used in the Stoneman Douglas massacre on February 14, authorities say.

It was previously reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation received, but did not act on, tips about Cruz's potential of becoming a school shooter, including one just a month before the 19-year-old killed 17 people at the school from which he was expelled.

The news comes days after more missed flags made national headlines, when the Miami Herald confirmed Cruz had confessed to his school psychiatrist that he "fantasized" about "being covered in blood".

The documents, provided by mental health facility Henderson Behavioral Health, reportedly described disturbing examples of Cruz's behavior, such as cutting his arm after breaking up with his girlfriend, telling a classmate that he wanted to buy a gun and use it, and telling another that he threw up after drinking gasoline.

The documents are part of Cruz's criminal case in the shooting. He reportedly told a Broward County sheriff's deputy that he made a decision to visit the school anyway to "reflect on the school shooting and to soak it in", according to the affidavit.

One of the guidance counselors told the Henderson clinic that the deputy had decided Mr. Cruz did not fit the criteria for involuntary commitment. The law allows a law enforcement officer such as Peterson to initiate commitment under the Baker Act.

On March 19, 2018 at 1630hrs, the defendant Zachary Cruz, unlawfully entered the school grounds of Stoneman Douglas High School and committed the crime of trespassing on school grounds after prior warnings by school officials to refrain from entering the school campus.

Not long after the Valentine's Day shooting, Zachary was put under a mental health observation after making comments about not wanting to be alive.

The report of a September 28, 2016 interview read that Cruz "cut his arms 3-4 weeks ago and states that this is the only time he has ever cut".

The FBI is taking the blame for not acting on the situation regarding Nikolas Cruz.
