The pedestrian bridge, designed by FIGG Engineering-Bridge Group and built by MCM Construction, was created to straddle 8th Street and connect the campus to the nearby Sweetwater neighborhood, where thousands of students live. The FIGG engineer of record delivered a technical presentation regarding the crack and concluded that there were no safety concerns and the crack did not compromise the structural integrity of the bridge. This meeting was attended by representatives for FIU and FDOT. "At the core of this investigation is: how did this happen?"

Two days after the last victim's body was removed from a collapsed bridge near Florida International University, the first civil lawsuit stemming from the tragedy has been filed - and it claims reckless negligence on the part of the companies who oversaw the bridge's design and construction. Our deepest sympathies are with all those affected by this accident. "I will cherish every memory we've made and will miss you every day for the rest of my life". "Thoughts & prayers to all the families impacted by this tragedy". But he said more testing needs to be done by the NTSB. "This experience is apparent in the efficient services we provide and the instrumentation that we have developed and use on our projects". "For example, we have worked on more than 230 bridges throughout the United States and have designed almost 35 miles of bridges in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico that have withstood multiple hurricanes".

FIGG collaborated on the project with MCM Construction, a Miami-based contractor.

Officials said Brandon Brownfield and Alexa Duran died in the collapse last week. The bridge was being built for FIU, and FIU was involved in the project delivery. No one has done that, but there may have been warning signs of structural issues.

Morgan said that since the collapse, he has heard of a voicemail in which someone reported seeing a crack in the bridge. The transcription is below and audio is available HERE: "Hey Tom, this is Denney Pate with FIGG bridge engineers".

But shortly after it was put into place, an engineer discovered some worrisome cracking in the bridge's north end. "From a safety perspective, we don't see that there's any issue there. When the employee returned to his office today, Friday, March 16, he was able to listen to the voicemail".

A vigil is scheduled Wednesday on campus.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said the tightening of the bridge's inner cables could have contributed to the collapse.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the disaster, but has yet to determine what caused the collapse. "As FDOT assists in these investigations, we will continue our internal review and release all pertinent information as quickly as possible while ensuring its accuracy".
