Apple has already managed to build MicroLED displays for the Apple Watch, albeit in a proof-of-concept kind of way. MicroLED screens use different light-emitting compounds than OLED displays and could make future devices slimmer, brighter and less power-hungry. The company also wants to avoid exposure of its proprietary technology away from its partners.

Apple now designs chips for its mobile devices and a move into displays could hurt screen makers like Samsung Electronics Co, Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and LG Display Co in the long term.

Universal Display stock hit an all-time high of 209 on January 19, before heading south. Apple also uses OLED screens in its current Apple Watch smartwatches.

This way, Apple could dominate by being the first technology giant to introduce microLEDs in the smartphone and smartwatch segment and offer consumers a better and much-improved level of quality than any other manufacturer.

These challenges led to Apple nearly killing its own development project a year ago, according to Bloomberg's sources, but in the end it chose to continue working on the technology. "Our Taiwan team reduced iPhone X estimates last night". It bought the startup LuxVue in 2014, and there have been many subsequent reports on how the purchase might be put to use.

Apple has a secret plant in Silicon Valley where it has been making its now microLED display panels.

The stock prices of rival display makers such as Japan Display, Sharp, and Samsung all fell after Bloomberg reported Apple's screen development initiative. The Apple watch display is manufactured by LG Display. If it is successful in producing MicroLED screens, some of its suppliers will miss important business opportunities. Only in recent months have Apple engineers grown confident in their ability to eventually replace screens from Samsung and other suppliers. Each has three sub-pixels: red, green and blue LEDs.
