Yamuna Expressway Accident: 3 doctors from AIIMS killed

Three doctors working with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) were killed and four others injured in an accident Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. Three people died on spot.

The deceased have been identified as Harshad Wankhede (34) who hailed from Maharashtra, Hem Bala (24) from Haryana and Yashpreet Singh (25) whose family is from Punjab, police said. All of them were travelling in a silver coloured SUV, which crashed into a canter around 2.30 AM in the morning.

Police here said the accident occurred near milestone 88 under Surir police station area of Mathura district on the Yamuna expressway at around 0230 hrs.

According to Shukla, Dr Jitendra, Dr Mahesh, Dr Abhinav and Dr Catherine were later rushed to the AIIMS.

The rest of the two resident doctors suffered minor injuries including fractures in the spine, ribs and hips, they said.

The canter driver abandoned his vehicle and fled, the police officer said. In the accident, 3 AIIMS doctors have lost their lives.

The driver of the SUV was trying to overtake the canter when the accident occurred, SP (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said, adding their speeding SUV (Toyota Innova) was stuck in the canter and dragged along for almost 300 metre.

Dr Wankhade was a senior resident doctor, while others were junior resident doctors (non-academic).

Bodies of those who died were sent for postmortem in Mathura, while the injured were taken to the nearby Bhaskar Hospital for preliminary treatment.

The Innova driver too was shifted to AIIMS.

In January, a 30-year-old Delhi woman was killed and her parents critical injured after the auto in which they were travelling overturned on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district.
