Virginia coach Tony Bennett on NCAA exit: 'We had a historic loss'

Virginia was No. 1 in the tournament, No. 1 in the polls, just off making history by going unbeaten on the road in the ACC. The #1 seed Virginia Cavaliers became the first #1 seed in NCAA tournament history to lose in the first round to a #16 seed.

"We go into every game thinking we have a chance to win", said guard Joe Sherburne, who had 14 points after provided a huge spark early in the second half.

The Retrievers will now play Kansas State in the second round on Sunday.

But UMBC - an afterthought for fans who filled out brackets - didn't just beat Virginia, it dominated throughout the second half, dismantling the 20 1/2-point favorites by 20 points.

In the postgame press conference, head coach Tony Bennett kept it straight forward when asked how he views his team's season. "We've seen this many, many times with him, and I don't know if anybody could ever predict the guy would go from an unknown to a first-team All-American, but he is one terrific guard". While their offense isn't, statistically, as efficient as Virginia's, it does have the capacity to be more dynamic.

"These guys have passion, these guys love to play this game", Odom said.

Lyles scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half against the Cavaliers, but UMBC would need no comeback this time.

If I were a betting man (and I am), I would bet this is going to be the most common sports conversation all of us have for the rest of our lives.

If you went to bed early on Friday night, you kinda missed something.

After Gerrity's comparison of the win against UVA feeling like a Victory Royale in Fortnite, the UMBC player dials it back a bit by treating the situation with a little more integrity.

By the time Arkel Lamar made a 3-pointer with 3:35 left in the game, UMBC led, 61-44, and had the crowd cheering wildly in anticipation of the Retrievers completing a remarkable feat reminiscent of another ignominious Virginia loss. UMBC was the loudest crowd there, and the team played with a passion.

"I don't think we defended well; we didn't pass the ball well; we didn't come off screens well; we didn't really do anything well", Jerome said.

In 1982, the Cavaliers, then ranked first in the country, fell to little-known Chaminade during a holiday tournament in Hawaii. What made the occasion even more wild was that not only did UMBC win, they dismantled Virginia, trouncing them 74-54.

Seton Hall, which tied for third in the Big East and is seeded eighth, scored on its first eight possessions and led throughout its 94-83 first-round win over North Carolina State. They busted everyone's bracket they least they can do is stick around for a little longer. A typical team that makes half of its two-pointers and a third of its threes might score anywhere from, say, 48 to 72 points on 60 shots taken in the painted area in front of the hoop. 16-seeds have hung in with 1's before but rarely do they last.
