  • At least 1 shot at Alabama hospital At least one person was shot on Wednesday night at the UAB Hospital Highlands in Birmingham Alabama

Police say one man is dead and another is in critical condition after a gunman opened fire at an Alabama hospital before fatally shooting himself.

Nancy Swift, 63, was a nursing supervisor.

Of the two injured, one was an employee who was shot multiple times in the chest and had to be taken to the main UAB Hospital.

Peter Williston said officers called to UAB Highlands Hospital at 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday encountered two victims along with the gunman, who had died of a self-inflicted gunshot. He is an employee of STERIS, an infection prevention company that UAB contracts with.

Police say the scene is secure and authorities issued an "all clear" alert about 7:45 p.m. after ordering students to shelter-in-place.

For Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Harold Watson, the shooting proves the need for more active shooting training for first responders.

Police didn't release the names of the wounded person or the suspected gunman.

When staff was led to UAB Police headquarters, a woman was said to have had a panic attack and needed to be examined by medics.

All surgeries scheduled for Thursday at UAB Highlands Hospital have been canceled, according to UAB.

Officials say the hospital has metal detectors that were in use, but they didn't explain how the shooter entered the building with a gun.
