The army said the driver was a "terrorist" who ran over soldiers who were securing routes near the Jewish settlement of Mevo Dotan, west of the Palestinian town of Jenin.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed, and another two were wounded, in a car-ramming attack carried out by a Palestinian terrorist in the West Bank on Friday.

The driver, who fled from the scene, was captured by Israeli security forces shortly after the attack and was lightly injured, he was evacuated to the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera.

The Israeli military said on Twitter the suspect, 26-year-old Alaa Rattab-a-Latif Kabha, had been taken to a hospital and was being questioned.

Palestinian groups had called for Friday to be a "day of rage", to mark exactly 100 days since US President Donald Trump's historic decison to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, in December.

Car-ramming attacks have been used by Palestinians against Israelis in violence that has surged in 2015 but has been on a lower ebb in recent months.

The US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital has been welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but has infuriated Palestinians.

Hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility for it.

The settlements are considered illegal under worldwide law, though Israel disputes this.

At least 31 Palestinians and four Israelis have been killed since Trump's announcement, which set off major protests.

The four were struck when the vehicle ploughed into their group close to the settlement of Mevo Dotan near Jenin in the northern West Bank.

Palestinians in the occupied territory have lived under Israeli military rule for more than half a century.
