  • Report: Georgia meeting with Tom Crean

Georgia needs a new basketball coach, and the program is exploring the possibility of hiring current ESPN analyst Tom Crean.

Many people dismiss Crean for the job that he did at IN, never taking the team further than the Sweet Sixteen IN nine years.

Tom Crean appears to be heading to the SEC.

Before coming to Indiana, Crean coached Marquette for nine seasons and made the NCAA Tournament five times. The Bulldogs have a vacancy after firing Mark Fox, who struggled to live up to expectations in his nine seasons on the job.

Crean was 356-231 in 18 seasons at Marquette and Indiana.

"I am honored an humbled to join the University of Georgia family", Crean said in the statement.

Beat writer Marc Weiszer reports that the deal will pay Crean in excess of $3 million annually for the next six years. He began his career at IN with the program on NCAA probation, which was a result of more than 100 impermissible phone calls made to recruits by predecessor Kelvin Sampson and his assistants. The Hoosiers fired him after missing the NCAA Tournament following a No. 11 in the AP Top 25 poll for the 2016-17 season.

Crean served as head coach at Marquette from 1999-2008, leading the program to the 2003 Final Four and four more NCAA bids.

Georgia extended an offer to former Ohio State coach Thad Matta, but Matta announced Wednesday that he was turning down the job.

IU was on the hook for a roughly $4 million buyout when Crean was let go a year ago, but most or all of the rest of that financial obligation will likely be offset with his new contract. Those squads combined to win four regular-season and two conference tournament titles.
