  • Nikolas Cruz accused of murdering 17 people in the Florida high school shooting appears in court for a status hearing in Fort Lauderdale Fla. Cruz was formally charged Wednesday March 7 with 17 counts of first-degree

Due to "strong public interest", a judge ordered the release of the surveillance video from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during last month's shooting which left 17 people dead and 15 others wounded.

Authorities say it depicts actions during the shooting by former deputy Scot Peterson, who was armed and assigned to the school but did not enter the targeted building during the shooting.

Cruz, the 19-year-old former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.

After speaking into his radio, Mr Peterson can be seen making his way to the building where students were being murdered in a golf cart.

The clips do not show the carnage inside building 12 or the faces of any students, but they do shed light on the actions of Broward County sheriff's deputy Scot Peterson after the first shots were fired.

Peterson resigned on February 22 rather than face suspension. After the staffer knocks on the door, the two quickly walk away and drive off in a golf cart.

The same day as Cruz's trial, students around the country organized a 17-minute walkout to protest gun violence in American schools. In a statement released on his behalf, his attorney said Peterson believed the shooting was coming from outside the school buildings and his client did nothing wrong.

But Peterson's own radio transmissions suggest he had focused on the 1200 building, where the killings took place, according to the Sheriff's Office. "There are no words", said Israel, who described himself as "devastated, sick to my stomach" after watching the video. Officers are trained to engage an active shooter.

"Make sure there's no pedestrian traffic anywhere on Holmberg Road", Peterson said. In a statement issued through his lawyer shortly after his retirement, he said he thought the shots were being fired from outside the school.

They also were operating on delayed information.

But that mishap "never put us in a situation where any kids' lives were in danger, any teachers' lives were in danger", said Coral Springs police Chief Tony Pustizzi, whose officers responded to the scene.

The BSO last week released a detailed timeline of events based on 911 calls and dispatch communications that were made during the shooting.
