A Russian exile on the run from Moscow was found dead in his home in London, British media reported, citing his lawyer.

Nikolai Glushkov, 68, was discovered dead late on Monday at an address in Clarence Avenue in suburban south-west London.

It is not yet known how he died but his death has not been linked to the Salisbury poisoning case, the Metropolitan police said.

Mr Glushkov also had a close friendship with fellow Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky, who came to the United Kingdom in 1999 after falling out with Mr Putin.

This news comes after Russian journalist Damian Kudryavtsev posted a tribute to Mr Glushkov on his personal Facebook account.

Berezovsky was found hanged in a home in Berkshire, England in 2013. An inquest failed to establish if he had committed suicide or died from foul play.

It said counter-terrorism detectives are leading the investigation "as a precaution because of associations that the man is believed to have had".

He told The Guardian: "I'm definite Boris was killed".

According to the Russian Embassy in London, the United Kingdom refused to extradite Glushkov in February 2016 on charges of large-scale fraud and embezzlement during his time as the deputy director of the Russian national airline Aeroflot. "The death is now being treated as an unexplained".

While officers are not naming him, he is believed to be businessman Nikolai Glushkov, who was top of a list of "fugitives from justice" published by the Russian embassy which accused him of committing "severe financial offences".

He fled Russian in 2010 and was given political asylum in Britain.

"Boris was strangled. Either he did it himself or with the help of someone". In the meantime, Glushkov was charged with money laundering and fraud, ending up behind bars for five years in Russian Federation.

Neighbour Patricia Egan said Mr Glushkov had lived there for several years, describing him as well educated and "a lovely fellow".

In 2017, during a trial in absentia in Russia, Glushkov was sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing $123m from the company.

Russian Federation has dismissed accusations of any involvement in the Skripal case as "nonsense", saying it would only cooperate with the British investigation if it receives samples of the nerve agent believed to have been used.
