Tillerson is out, replaced by Central Intelligence Agency chief

  • WASHINGTON DC- MARCH 13 President Donald Trump holds a meeting with members of his cabinet including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis in the Cabinet Room of the White House

The imposition of additional sanctions against Tehran could have implications for a number of multinational companies, including Boeing, which have rushed to tap the Iranian market since sanction relief was provided in 2015 under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the Iran deal is known.

On the same day he jettisoned Tillerson, the president's personal assistant was escorted from the White House after his security clearance was revoked - and promptly was given a senior job with Trump's re-election campaign. "We have a state department thats been emaciated and a diplomacy that's been undermined at a critical time in our history".

"I will now return to private life, private citizen, a proud American, proud of the opportunity I've had to serve my country".

A White House official said Mr Trump wanted to have a new team in place before upcoming talks with North Korea and various trade negotiations.

The ex-Secretary of State had also warned Nigeria and the rest of Africa against accessing financial help from China. Tillerson will remain secretary in name until March 31, when he formally resigns his commission.

"Rex Tillerson's cozy relationship with the Kremlin is especially alarming in light of his attitude toward sanctions over Russia's aggressive behavior in Europe, while at the same time the President-elect continues to side with Russian Federation over the judgment of the us intelligence community", she wrote.

State department officials have told reporters that Rex Tillerson found out he'd lost his job after the US President tweeted about it.

Goldstein was sacked later on Tuesday, two United States officials said. Tom Cotton (R-AR) told reporters Tuesday, adding that he hopes the Senate will act swiftly to confirm Pompeo to the role. "He established and enjoyed relationships with his counterparts", Goldstein said.

Before leaving on a trip to California, Trump spoke openly of their differences - singling out the Iran nuclear deal - as he explained the rationale for the latest departure from his chaotic White House.

Tillerson had joined Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in pressing a sceptical Trump to stick with the agreement with Iran and other world powers over Tehran's nuclear ambitions; and he has taken a more hawkish view than Trump on Russian Federation.

Tillerson had been seen as out-of-step with the president for months.

All of the officials demanded anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

"I think Rex will be much happier now", Trump said. Trump frequently criticized the agreement as a candidate. He declared Tuesday, "I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want".

Trump announced earlier that he had fired Tillerson, replacing his top diplomat ahead of a potential high-stakes sitdown between the President and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Another suggested Mr Tillerson may follow the path of former Trump aide Omarosa Manigault Newman and go for a stint on Celebrity Big Brother. Goldstein's swift firing after refuting the Trump administration's rhetoric further reinforces the erratic nature of the White House under Trump's tenure and stands as a cause for concern moving forward. But the tensions peaked last fall amid reports Tillerson had called Trump a "moron" and considered resigning.

Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo, is set to move into Mr Tillerson's job.

Her confirmation hearing has yet to be scheduled.
