At least one person was killed and many were injured on Tuesday when a bus carrying high school students plunged into a ravine off the side of an interstate highway in Baldwin County, Alabama, the sheriff's office said.

The bus was traveling west, carrying the students home from Central Florida when it drove into the median on Interstate 10 and then into the ravine at Cowpen Creek, about 5:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. ET), Mack said.

All of those on board were taken to 10 hospitals in Alabama and Florida, either by helicopter or ambulance, to be checked out or treated. Caligone's wife told KTRK she didn't think it was human error that caused the crash. Authorities said that 19 people were transported to two local hospitals, with patients also being taken to eight other facilities.

Channelview ISD Superintendent Greg Ollis said there were 40 students on the bus that crashed along with six adults.

The driver of the bus was reportedly killed, while others sustained a wide range of injuries.

Baldwin County Sheriff Mack said emergency units - forced to rappel down the ravine - were dispatched to extricate the passengers.

"I felt hopeless and like I couldn't do anything", said Josh Torres, the brother of one of the victims. He looked down to see the bus lying on its side near the base of a concrete embankment, its front end crumpled.

He said he watched four people being removed from the wreckage, and couldn't hear any yelling or sounds of panic.

An official with the bus charter company, First Class Tours of Houston, said the company was working on a statement.

The interstate was closed down in both directions as the injured were rushed to the various hospitals.

"At this time, details are limited", Kramer said in a statement.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show that in the past two years, First Class Tours has been involved in four other crashes, including a fatal crash in Houston in May 2017.

According to a Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report, one of the company buses failed to yield the right of way in May 2017 in Houston, fatally striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk as the bus turned left.
