The Guardian's Amy Nicholson was similarly critical, saying "A Wrinkle in Time feels like a product molded by a megacorporation too tense to hand over the factory controls".

The opening of Aviron Pictures' "The Strangers: Prey at Night" led the rest of the pack in third with $10.4 million at 2,464 venues.

He went on to discuss the early days of DuVernay's career as an admired Hollywood publicist, noting she'd written, produced, and directed "two fantastic films, about black women finding hope while experiencing grief and loss, all while maintaining a production and distribution company to finance and distribute underserved independent films made by women and people of color".

Dave Hollis, president of worldwide distribution for Disney, told Variety that "Black Panther" and "A Wrinkle in Time" accounted for inclusion through their portrayals of strong female and minority characters. -- Disney's A Wrinkle in Time is now playing in theatres!

For the first time, black directors have claimed the two top spots at the box office.

Debuting in second place, Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" came in soft with $33.3 million, slightly lower than the $35 million some analysts had expected heading into the weekend.

The movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Minday Kaling, Chris Pine and newcomer Storm Reid grossed another $6.3 million overseas in six territories, so it still has a lot of room to grow its worldwide audience.

"A Wrinkle in Time" follows Meg (Storm Reid) as she embarks upon a quest to find her parents, Dr. Alex Murry (Chris Pine) and Dr. Kate Murry (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) somewhere in the universe.

Overall domestic box office was $137 million, down 17 per cent from the same weekend a year ago when "Kong: Skull Island" opened with $61 million. That's just about half what the original The Strangers movie did when released by Rogue Pictures in 2008, and the sequel's "C" CinemaScore does not bode well for its future.

Jennifer Lawrence's smutty spy thriller 'Red Sparrow' took a beating at the box office over its second week. It has now gained a domestic total of $562 million, with more than a billion dollars globally. Both face formidable competition from the fifth weekend of "Black Panther", which could contend again for first place.
