When the latest info from an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe scandal encompassed more than two dozen programs last month, it seemed a given the NCAA tournament would suffer aftershocks.

College basketball is in trouble.

Carolina's fairly recent switch to a small ball lineup (starting Cam Johnson and playing jack-of-all-trades Theo Pinson at the four) made them a potent offensive team and sparked their surge in February.

This smorgasbord of unnecessary games has become another blight on a sport that already has enough problems, denying worthy teams their well-earned shot at the NCAA Tournament while taking an enormous physical toll on the players. The top four teams receiving the fewest points (the best team is valued at No. 1) make up a seed line.

The Villanova Wildcats have been at or near the top of the rankings for the majority of the season. The No. 1 seed is Kansas, but the Jayhawks may have to face No. 8 Seton Hall (21-11), which began the season with great promise, in the second round and either Clemson (23-9), which finished fourth in the A.C.C., or Auburn in the Round of 16. Charleston guard Joe Chealey averages 17 points and 3.7 assists per game. The Spartans have a better overall and record and won the Big Ten regular season title, but also lack quality wins. "Really over the course of the season we have done some really good work and I don't think it's a question of whether we deserve to play in the NCAA tournament".

As for LIU, just getting into the field is a major accomplishment for first-year coach Derek Kellogg. "They're not", NCAA selection committee chair Bruce Rasmussen told CBSSports.com last weekend. There were other head-scratchers, but maybe the committee learned its lesson. Took Canisius to the NCAA Tournament, then Richmond, and then West Virginia to the Elite 8. One-and-done is a hot topic right now. The Cavaliers' draw caught the attention of national commentators, who were quick to label the South the tournament's toughest region.

Can Arizona overcome a tumultuous month? Virginia has remarkable defensive power and has been more consistent than any team in the nation.

On the flip side, other ESPN analysts have said they think Tim Miles' squad still has a chance to get in. The university backs both coach and player. It's the second year in a row the teams will meet in the final, and the third consecutive final for the Panthers. Not so for regular-season champions such as Florida Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun), UNC Asheville (Big South), Northern Kentucky (Horizon) and Wagner (Northeast).
