Haberman, a White House reporter for The New York Times, wrote Saturday along with her colleague that Trump was considering hiring a veteran Washington lawyer who had previously assisted former President Bill Clinton in the Lewinsky scandal.

Flood advised Bill Clinton in the late 1990s in impeachment proceedings brought by the U.S. House of Representatives and tried before the U.S. Senate, where he was acquitted. A number of sources confirmed that an interview had taken place in the Oval Office, during which the two discussed the possibility of Flood joining Trump's team to help deal with Mueller's inquiry.

"I am VERY happy with my lawyers". The White House is now negotiating with Mueller over a possible interview with the president.

Mr. Flood had been on the wish list of some of the president's advisers to join his legal team a year ago, and he is the only person the White House has been in contact with about such a role. But Trump also appears eager to shake up his legal team, alternating between praising Cobb's cooperative strategy and agitating for a more confrontational approach.

Flood, a partner at Williams & Connolly, would not replace White House special counsel Ty Cobb, who joined the White House as special counsel in July. It is unclear how Flood's responsibilities might differ from Cobb's.

But Cobb - who has been the main point of contact between the White House and Mueller's office - does not expect to remain on the job much longer, The Times reported.

White House officials did not immediately answer a request for comment when the Times reached out.

Flood's law firm, Williams and Connolly, represents Hillary Clinton, including in the email scandal, one possible reason that sources told Reuters a year ago the firm turned down representing Trump as outside counsel.
