Producers of the revamped show said they wanted judges with credibility and the result was a new three-person panel consisting of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. No, but like the time change, American Idol is back on Sunday, whether we like it or not.

Richie said the goal is to find more than a singer: "We are looking for an artist, and that's going to require our expertise".

According to the network, no North Carolina "Idol" hopefuls are featured in the first two episodes, but contestants may turn up in later episodes.

But, with so many other reality competitions on the air, it is hard to see what sets "American Idol" apart. "They need, like, a real legit American Idol".

You can join millions of people around the country who will tune in for the premiere of American Idol on ABC tonight at 7 pm.

Harris was equally stunned by the talent in the room when she sang and yodeled the Patsy Montana classic "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" during her audition. Do you remember who won that final season two years ago? You can tune in for the premiere of American Idol Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. "I think you've got something", Perry said, adding that she could learn a lot from the Hollywood Weed experience. "We're here to really find a star and, if someone isn't a star, delicately help repurpose them on the path that's going to be good for them". Her claim to fame is that when she was 11-years-old, her performance of the National Anthem went viral as one of the worst renditions of the song ever. "It's kind of a more sophisticated chord structure, like country mixed with jazz nearly, and I just loved the sound of it".

"I heard that Luke was coming on and we were all wondering what the third position would be, and I was really gung-ho about Lionel coming in from Day 1", Katy revealed to E!

For the Disney-owned network, Idol is a company-wide play: ABC kicked off auditions at Disney Spring, the entertainment complex at Disney World in Orlando, and contestants are expected to make promotional stops on ABC's Good Morning America and Live With Kelly and Ryan.

West Philadelphia's Dennis Lorenzo performs on Sunday's premiere of "American Idol" on ABC. Katy explained, "We are just so rambunctious".

Watching that last scene as well as one or two others - let me just say here "alpacas" - actually made me feel something inside my wizened old TV watcher's chest, a warm and fuzzy kind of nostalgia for a once-classic show getting at least a little bit of its groove back.
