Oprah Gives Young Girl $50K to Match 'A Wrinkle in Time' Fundraiser

  • Storm Reid is Meg Murry.
Disney

2003. But Meg, the reluctant, bespectacled heroine of Madeleine L'Engle's classic "A Wrinkle in Time", has been with us, and on the shelves of middle-schoolers, since 1962. This is hardly a passive, by-the-numbers checklist of plot points, the fate of most YA books translated to the big screen.

But of course, that's never stopped Disney before - they'll do anything if they think it produces money - so here we are.

A Wrinkle in Time is in theaters tomorrow.

Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey have a charming, warm friendship.

A quick word about that: I don't want to take anything away from that milestone.

As Disney releases A Wrinkle in Time this weekend, another iconic novel joins the ranks of those adapted to live-action, a task which was no easy feat for screenwriter Jennifer Lee.

It was filmed in New Zealand with an A-list cast that included Oprah Winfrey.

Read what the critics are saying:"This Wrinkle in Time is undoubtedly flawed, wildly uneven and apt to tie itself in narrative knots in a quest to wow you with sheer Technicolor weirdness". That's ridiculous. Movies have been around for over 100 years, this is something that should have happened a long, long time ago. Since it has kept first place at the box office since its debut on February 16 and if it ends up topping "Wrinkle" to take the No. 1 spot again, it will become the first movie since "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to finish at No. 1 for four straight weekends.

That, of course, has nothing to do with the actual quality of the film.

That commencement speech...no one knows this (you're the first to know this) came out of "A Wrinkle in Time". Who is - oh, she's, like, a billion years old and way more knowledgeable. Alex was right on the brink of some incredible scientific discovery - something that could potentially unlock all the secrets of the universe, or something like that - before he disappeared. And for good reason - Alex is actually alive. Meg clings to the belief that her father will return, but she can't help resenting his absence. When he answers the door to what amounts to a very unusual woman named Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon; Walk the Line) things suddenly seem to spiral out of control. But it's something that I wish Duvernay would have caught while they were filming... or at least in the editing room. The film sends the simultaneous messages that it's futile to coddle children but also that it's okay to feel the icky stuff that you feel, because even your weaknesses can be transformed to strengths.

If only there was a good script to accompany those bold chances. We're built on diversity, so the same goes in storytelling. Which towers over everyone else (she's Oprah) and has silver eyebrows and lipstick and a wardrobe resembling Ursula's of "The Little Mermaid". Essentially, the talent involved seems to make this a bit of a disappointment, though when considering the time of year, it's hardly a must miss. However, the movie shoots for the shallower end of that pool, which, given its rich source material, talented director, and stellar, diverse cast, makes it something of a letdown.

The Disney film also stars Michael Peña, Chris Pine, Bellamy Young, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis and Levi Miller.
