The retired Los Angeles Lakers star added another trophy to his mantle at Sunday night's Academy Awards, winning the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for his role in "Dear Basketball".

The five-time NBA championship victor won the award for his short film, Dear Basketball, and accepted the honor with his director, Glen Keane, during the show.

Bryant, 39, a five-time National Basketball Association champion, played 20 seasons with the Lakers before retiring following the 2015-16 season.

As it turned out, the recent "shut up and dribble" episode between a pair of National Basketball Association stars and a Fox News host was also referenced during the Academy Awards - by Kobe Bryant, as the former Lakers great was making his acceptance remarks. Brown, in particular, resonated with Bryant's message for basketball players to continue to do more than "shut up and dribble." .

"We will definitely not shut up and dribble", James said shortly thereafter.

As for his words of wisdom for those who have found fame in one avenue and want to switch careers, Bryant shared his own advice: stay true to your passion.

While Bryant is considered one of the best players to ever play the game of basketball, he is also making a name for himself now as a good businessman, as well as a gifted filmmaker. The film was produced by Glen Keane, an author and an animator with the Disney Studios. "After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter". Sexual assault charges were filed against Bryant, but the case was dropped three weeks after it was filed because the woman didn't want to proceed. "I was broken. I would rather get eaten by a great white shark than go through that marriage again". But Kobe Bryant, who was charged with a horrific sexual assault, was nominated. Why is Bryant being honored for best animated short if Time really is Up? "That's cute (they told me when I spoke of my aspirations to be a storyteller). I'm jealous lol", Shaq tweeted.

Bryant also led the Lakers to consecutive NBA Championships in 2009 and 2010, winning the NBA Finals MVP Award both years.
