Apple's High-End Over-Ear Headphones Have Faced Development Challenges

According to a report on Bloomberg, Apple plans to launch the headphones as early as the end of this year.

Apple-owned Beats now sells high-end on-ear headphones that you can find inside the company's own retail spaces, however, a recent report suggested that Apple is developing its own-brand high-end headphones that it's going to launch later this year. As a result, Apple is going to have to be smart about the pricing strategy, which it will, given its success with the AirPods. The company's largest ever acquisition was the $3 billion purchase of Beats in 2014-a deal that got Apple into high-end headphones and music streaming.

Apple's AirPods earphones swept the market in an unexpected way and now, the Cupertino-based company hopes for an encore performance at the high end of the market. That would ostensibly put them in direct competition with the company's Beats by Dre subsidiary, which now sells its own pair of noise-cancelling headphones for $350.

A pair of wireless headphones, to rival those produced by Bose, Sennheiser, and Beats itself, seems like a logical step for Apple. However, unlike what some might expect, they won't be from Beats by Dre, a subsidiary of Apple. Because Beats sell at a broader price range from $100 to $350, the new Apple headphones may not cannibalize Beats' margins, according to Bloomberg. On the contrary, the headphones are expected to follow the footsteps of AirPod and will feature a similar set of features as well.

Bloomberg says that the headphones will be noise-cancelling, and offer the same wireless pairing functionality as AirPods. Given their over-the-ear design, they will likely sound superior to the AirPods as well.
