WaPo: Trump Has Referred To Jeff Sessions As 'Mr. Magoo'

  • Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz was appointed to his current role by Obama but was nominated by President George W. Bush as a commissioner of the U.S. sentencing commission

Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Solicitor General Noel Francisco left Central Michel Richard, an upscale DC restaurant a block away from the Justice Department, a little before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Trump believes the Federal Bureau of Investigation tricked the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to surveil a former campaign member, Carter Page, based on a Democrat-connected dossier.

Sessions, an early supporter of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, responded with a terse statement in which he pledged "to discharge my duties with integrity and honor". Mueller is probing whether Trump tried to obstruct justice as part of the special counsel's investigation into links between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, and the investigation has already found that Trump pressured Sessions not to recuse himself from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation in March 2017, per the New York Times.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions attends a ceremony honoring Reverend Billy Graham as he lies in repose at the U.S. Capitol, Feb. 28, 2018, in Washington, DC. But in the Trump Administration the undermining too often seems to come from the President.

Sessions has been with Trump since nearly the beginning of Trump's wildly improbable presidential campaign. So Horowitz has worked for both Republican and Democratic administrations and was and remains a "Justice Department lawyer". Trump believes the inspector general will "take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc".

"4. If you take the matter from the IG, it's going to be handled by career prosecutors, and you're not going to like them any more than any 'Obama guy, ' and they're going to take just as long".

He then questioned whether the inspector general was holdover from the Obama era (he is - Michael E. Horowitz was sworn in as inspector general for the Justice Department in 2012) and later probed why Sessions would not "use Justice Department lawyers" instead.

"Not that I know of", said press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. That focus likely includes the tweet Trump sent Wednesday, berating Sessions for not pushing to counter Mueller's investigation, as well as his ongoing campaign to humiliate Sessions into resigning.

Endorsing Trump was a insane gambit to effect a revolution in the party, and it worked. Around the same time, Trump belittled Sessions on Twitter, calling him a "beleaguered" attorney general. Sessions also did not disclose multiple meetings with Russia's ambassador during the 2016 campaign during his confirmation hearing and on security clearance forms.

The newspaper reported that during that summer period, the president privately discussed firing Sessions or forcing him out.

Rosenstein is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election after Sessions recused himself.

That is hardly an endorsement of Sessions, and it stands in stark contrast to the unequivocal "no" Sanders offered when asked whether Trump might remove his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.
