Study reveals there are five distinct types of diabetes

  • There is often confusion between MODY and Type 1 Diabetes as both are found to affect young people or children. Type 1 Diabetes is diagnosed in those suffering from MODY leading to misdiagnosis

"The most insulin resistant patients (Group 3) have the most to gain from the new diagnostics as they are the ones who are now most incorrectly treated", says Professor Leif Groop.

Diabetes that begins in adulthood falls into five distinct categories, new research has revealed, with scientists suggesting it is time to ditch the idea that diabetes is largely split into two types. They came up with instead of five subtypes, which are classified on the basis of the development of the disease and its complications.

They found different disease profiles were also present in these patients, including three severe and two mild forms of the disease.

For many years, diabetes cases have largely been classified as either type 1 or type 2.

Researchers in Sweden and Finland have classified five distinct types of diabetes that can occur in adulthood, instead of the two now recognized.

By analysing 13,270 diabetics, . the study identified three...

Now just over six people in every hundred have diabetes in the county - a shade under the national average of 6.6 but enough, says Diabetes UK, to cause concern.

"Type 1 diabetes isn't now preventable, but three in five cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with a healthy lifestyle and better understanding of the condition". Type 2 diabetes - usually diagnosed in adults - develops when the body can not produce enough insulin the right way.

The study was carried out by researchers from Lund University, Uppsala University and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden; and Vaasa Health Centre and the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Cluster 3: Severe insulin-resistant diabetes is mostly linked to obesity.

The researchers analysed certain characteristics - such as body weight, blood sugar control and presence of antibodies - against the likelihood of disease complications and need for insulin.

A further 12.3 million people are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, according to the charity's analysis. I only have to look at my mum's workload to see that: as a diabetes specialist nurse, she's busier than ever, supporting patients throughout day to day management of their condition and some of the more serious complications of the disease, from blindness to kidney failure and limb amputation.

And the final group, mild age-related diabetes, is the largest group, with 40 per cent of all patients, and consists mostly of elderly patients.

The authors noted that more research is needed on the issue.

Severe autoimmune diabetes (SAID): this tended to start at a younger age, in people with a relatively low BMI, poor blood sugar control, insulin deficiency and GADA. New research confirms that in general it's most commonly diagnosed in the young. The new substratification might help to tailor and target early treatment to those who would benefit most. Cluster 3 (n = 1,373) was characterized by severe insulin resistance and high BMI, whereas cluster 4 (n = 1,942) was characterized by obesity, but not insulin resistance.

The researchers are also planning to launch similar studies in China and India with people of different ethnic backgrounds.

In the same way that a patient requiring a transfusion must receive the right blood type, diabetes sub-types need different treatments, the study suggested.
