1.5M 'rare penguins' discovered in Antarctica

  • Penguin supercolony Antarctica

A "supercolony" of Adélie penguins has been found on a remote chain of rocky islands in the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, according to a new study published Friday in the journal Scientific Reports.

An worldwide team organized an expedition after they've noticed that the Danger Islands may be inhabited by penguins after some images captured with the Landsat satellite (owned by NASA and the US Geological Survey) depicted large amounts of penguins excrements on the islands.

The penguins remained well-hidden until Michael Polito, an assistant professor in the department of oceanography and coastal sciences at Louisiana State University went on a trip on a cruise ship and stopped by the Danger Islands, which definitely live up to their name.

This may have been due to their remoteness and the hard waters that surround them: even in the summer, anyone trying to reach the islands can expect to deal with thick sea ice.

It included the third and fourth-largest Adelie penguin colonies in the world.

It now calls the Danger Islands a "seabird hotspot".

Landsat satellite offered images showing lots of penguins' guano (excrements of the penguins) suggesting that the Danger Islands are inhabited by hundreds of thousands of penguins. Even more interesting, scientists think the penguins have flourished on the Danger Islands for decades, while other colonies of the birds have declined on other parts of the continent, especially on its western half.

Penguin supercolony Antarctica

The research team's December 2015 visit coincided with what is mid-summer in Antarctica, and at the islands, the average temperature hovered around 32 degrees, just at freezing, he said.

Then followed a field expedition for a census using a combination of drone footage, pictures taken on the ground, and an old fashioned walk-about headcount. Clearly climate change and reduction in ice and krill play a part, but a decline in sea-ice also allows in shipping - fisheries in particular - which may exacerbate the problem.

The finding is of major relevance because it shows the super-colony was able to avoid recent Adelie declines documented elsewhere on the Antarctic peninsula. That's more than the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined. The researchers also used a software to do the counting.

"Finally getting into the Danger Islands and counting the penguins shows how robust populations are where the ice is intact".

"Whether they'll be in or out, we don't know but at least now the people making those decisions will understand how important this area is", she told BBC News.

"We were... very lucky to have a window of time where the sea ice moved out and we could get a yacht in", said Lynch.
