Russian Federation vetoes bid to pressure Iran over Yemen

  • UN to vote on resolution that would condemn Iran

A council resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, France or Britain to pass.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi has dubbed USA claims over the alleged supply of missiles to Yemen to be "biased" amid the recent UK-drafted resolution, vetoed by Russian Federation in the UN Security Council.

Iran "categorically rejects allegations regarding arms transfer to Yemen", said a statement from the mission that described the draft resolution as an attempt to "distract" the world's attention from the "catastrophic humanitarian situation" in Yemen.

The Houthi movement has been defending Yemen against a bloody Saudi-led military campaign, which was launched in 2015 with the help of the USA and the United Kingdom to reinstall the country's former Riyadh-friendly government.

On Monday, the resolution gained 11 favorable votes at the 15-member Security Council but was halted by Russia's veto.

After hours of negotiations to try to reach a compromise, Russian Federation made clear it had strong reservations about the findings of the report and would not support a draft resolution that mentioned them.

Khoshroo added that Iran rejects the USA false claims that Iran handed over weapons to Yemen, emphasizing that those claims are aimed at helping the aggressors.

After the Russian veto, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley released a statement accusing Russia of protecting "the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran" and warned of further action targeting Iran.

But Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia wasn't satisfied.

The row came as the United Nations panel of experts on Yemen, charged with monitoring a 2015 arms embargo, formally presented its latest findings, which concluded that Iran was breaching sanctions.

The US immediately lashed out at Moscow for its veto, blaming Russian Federation for shielding a "terrorist-sponsoring" Iran.

Yemen, the Arab world's most impoverished country with a population of 26 million, plunged into war in 2014 after the Houthis took over the capital Sanaa and forced the internationally recognized government to flee and seek support from neighboring Gulf countries.

Instead of demanding accountability from Iran, Currie told the council that Russia, Bolivia, China and Kazakhstan "decided to shield Tehran from responsibility".

Russian envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzia welcomed the Security Council's unanimous support of the Russian resolution. In his words, Iran has to take responsibility for its actions.

"The Russian Federation can not support the draft resolution proposed by our British colleagues for the extension for the mandate of the panel of experts of Security Council committee 2140 and sanctions against Yemen", Nebenzia said on Monday. Millions of people are on the brink of starvation and more than 22 million - nearly the entire population - are in need, according to humanitarian agencies.

Khoshroo went on to say that there is no military solution to the crisis in Yemen, adding that Iran believes in a political solution.
