  • Mack Beggs of Euless Trinity smiles in the closing seconds of a Class 6A girls 110-pound semifinal bout during the UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center on Saturday

Beggs has been taking low-dose testosterone injections prescribed by his doctor since his freshman year, though that was not made public until last January.

Last year, when Beggs was 17, he won the Texas girls' Class 6A 110lb division after an unbeaten season in which several of his opponents pulled out, fearing injury.

"He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles", his mother Angela McNew said.

"They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls, ' " Beggs said, according to the News.

"And you're just going to tell me either to not wrestle at all or wrestle the guys?"

Many parents have been outraged to see their daughters wrestling someone who, effectively, has the strength of a young man.

Beggs' family has repeatedly said he wants to wrestle boys. No matter who you put in front of me, I feel like a champion no matter what. There have been lawsuits filed attempting to bar him from competing against women, and even legislative action that almost passed the state congressional houses.

It was done to help schools determine competition, said Jamie Harrison, the UIL's deputy director.

When he won the state title Saturday, the boos were overtaken by cheers, not that he lets the reception he receives affect him.

"It sure as hell didn't stop me from doing what I wanted to do in the past, and it won't stop me from what I want to do in the future".

Jordan Gutierrez, a university student who attended lasts year's state championship, reflected the common campus politics that resonates from many progressive professors and LGBT groups across America's colleges and universities.

Parents WFAA spoke with all seem to support Beggs' choice to be transgender, however many voiced that he should be wrestling boys or not wrestling at all.

Beggs, who was born female as Mackenzie, identifies as a male.

There was plenty of outrage on social media over the unfair advantage Beggs has over the competition, and over the effect transgenders are having on women's sports.

Here are two angles of Beggs' victory in the championship bout. "Beggs paid his [her] detractors no mind [and] hasn't challenged the rules because he doesn't want to risk losing his ability to participate", CNN reported at the time.

Texas has a new two-time high school wrestling champion. It finally paid off.
