  • Narendra Modi will launch the ambitious Amma two-wheeler scheme that envisages providing 50 per cent subsidy to 1 lakh working women every year to buy mopeds — a key promise made by late J. Jayalalithaa in the 2016 elections — on Saturday here

Modi said that a few amendments have been made to the Factory's Act to offer women flexible working environment (including night shifts) in factories.

"All our schemes and programmes have been oriented towards this aim".

He also planted a tree sapling and inaugurated the plan to plant 70 lakh tree saplings as a part of Jayalalithaa birth anniversary celebrations in the state.

Beginning his address in Tamil, Modi, who was given a rousing reception by the AIADMK and the BJP cadres, said, "On the occasion of the birth anniversary of J Jayalalithaa, I pay my tributes to her and extend my greeting and best wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu".

He also claimed slammed Congress and claimed that Tamil Nadu has received more funds under the NDA rule than Congress reign.

For rural housing projects, Tamil Nadu has been given about ₹ 700 crore in 2016-17 and about ₹ 200 crore in 2017-18. "Union government has so far given 3.5 crore free gas connections under this scheme. Thus, a woman's future is secured, the entire house future is secured", Modi said.

The beneficiaries included women who worked in the private sector, an accountant, a salesperson and an assistant in a private store. Talking about the Jan Dhan Yojana, he said that out of 31 crore Jan Dhan accounts, women hold about 16 crore accounts. "When we secure her future, we secure future of the entire home".

Modi said the women of India are coming out of their age old shackles and seeking self- employment. The scheme gives 50 per cent subsidy to women to buy a scooter.

Palaniswami will soon lead a delegation of farmers and leaders from all parties to urge Modi to constitute the Cauvery Management Board within six weeks, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Welcoming the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam said the state government continues to follow the footsteps of Jayalalithaa.

Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami has likened the ruling AIADMK to an "iron fort" which is impregnable and which can sustain any kind of attack. Modi was flown to the Indian Navy's base, INS Adyar, from where he took a minutes-long drive to the venue of the launch.
