Birmingham to Tunisia holidays resume three years after terror attack

About 200 passengers were on the flight, which left around 6am this morning. In the wake of the attack, the Foreign Office lifted advised against non-essential travel to the north African country but lifted the warning six months ago.

The visitors brought in by travel company Thomas Cook were greeted at the airport in Sousse, the site of the deadly assault, by a folk band and Tunisians handing out bouquets of jasmine. It will fly there three times a week, allowing Britons to join German and Belgian holidaymakers who have been going for two years now.

A Thomas Cook spokesman said the respnce to the flights is good and the company have taken 15,000 United Kingdom bookings so far.

United Kingdom travel operator Thomas Cook recently became the first major British travel company to resume flights to Tunisia, with its first flight touching down on 13 February. In the United Kingdom there have been terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

Chris Mottershead, managing director at Thomas Cook UK, said: "Tunisia has been a popular tourist destination for decades and with our first three flights sold out, there is an appetite from our customers".

Demand was reportedly even higher than this the following year, until the Sousse attack - in which gunman Seifeddine Rezgui killed a total of 38 tourists.
