  • Reports of scores of Russians killed in Syria are disinformation by anti-govt forces- Moscow

"We will strike the place where these launches are made or where they are organized", he told reporters in Paris. "More than 200 is the current estimate, we can not know the exact number yet, but a lot of them were Russian", he said. Those claims couldn't be verified.

The wounded were brought to military hospitals in Moscow and St. Petersburg, according to two people in contact with them, after more than 200 fighters died in last week's failed assault on a base held by USA -backed forces in Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor region.

Several Russians who had been hired as paramilitary contractors were among more than 100 men killed in USA airstrikes in northern Syria last week, according to their friends and families.

The state news agency Tass on Tuesday cited Natalya Krylova, a municipal lawmaker in the town of Asbestos in the Urals, saying local residents Igor Kosoturov and Stanislav Matveyev were killed in Syria on February 7.

Quoting the Cossack group in the westernmost Kalningrad region, the Interfax agency said a member named Vladimir Loginov was killed in combat in the province of Deir el-Zour.

Harrigian gave a timeline of events in which the pro-regime force had to retreat after it attacked an "established SDF position" where some US personnel were embedded.

"I demand an explanation as to why Russian nationals take part in ground military operations in Syria, despite the statements by the president and defense minister that Russian military formations will be withdrawn from this country", Yavlinsky said.

The Pentagon says a counterattack aimed at defending US forces in the oil-rich Deir el-Zour province a week ago went on for more than three hours and involved B-52 strategic bombers, AC-130 gunships, F-15E attack planes, Apache attack helicopters and Reaper drones.

The US military has confirmed that it has attacked pro-government forces in eastern Syria. Bloomberg reports, along with confirmations from the USA military, that U.S. troops engaged and killed around 100 Russian soldiers, injuring 200 to 300 hundred.

Russian forces have been propping up Assad during the seven-year war and began backing his regime with troops and firepower in 2015.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, reaffirmed Wednesday that the Kremlin has no information about the Russian losses in the clash. They said the deconfliction line was still operating and Russian Federation so far hadn't protested the decision to launch the air strikes.

"The fact that somebody chose to attack us, and the Russians are saying, "It's not us, ' and we are firing on them to stop the artillery fire, that, to me, is not a failure of the deconfliction line", Mattis explained".

The Russian Defence Ministry has insisted its troops were not involved in the incident.

Troops from Russia, Turkey, and the USA are now on the ground in Syria, in addition to ISIS fighters and other factions, like the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The Americans say their presence in Syria is necessary not only to solve military issues, "but until there is a stable political process there that should end with the transition of power that would be acceptable to all, that is, regime change". Russian nationals killed in the USA -led counter-strike include Vladimir Loginov, Kirill Ananyev, Alexei Ladygin, Stanislav Matveyev and Igor Kosoturov, some of whom had earlier fought in Donbass, according to the Conflict Intelligence Team.

"Those steps look increasingly as part of efforst to create a quasi-state on a large part of Syrian territory, from the eastern bank of the Euphrates River all the way to the border with Iraq", he went on.
