South African ruling party leaders to meet amid Zuma limbo

"Don't dictate what he should do and put labels to force him to do what you think must be done now", Mantashe said, slamming analysts who this week asked "where are Ramaphosa's balls" amidst the country's anxiety over Zuma's future.

Several thousand ANC supporters wearing the party's signature yellow, green and black colours attended the rally at the symbolic Grand Parade in central Cape Town.

Ramaphosa, one of the richest black South Africans, has had a hard relationship with Zuma since he left his business career and returned to full-time politics five years ago, and became deputy president in 2014.

Ramaphosa, who is expected to succeed Zuma, told the crowd that South Africans would soon have "closure" on talks to remove Zuma from office and that ruling party leaders will confirm details of a power transition during Monday's meeting. The two were widely expected to hold another meeting this weekend, which will signal a final decision on Zuma's future.

The jibe is in apparent reference to Cyril Ramaphosa's absence from politics to run businesses where he made a fortune before returning to active politics five years ago, becoming Zuma's successor.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe said the executive committee's meeting on Monday had been brought forward from next weekend, because of the urgency of the leadership issue.

President Jacob Zuma is being offered the chance to escape prosecution on charges of state capture if he admits criminal wrongdoing and turns against the Guptas.

The young Zuma said the family had no direct knowledge of how the talks between Zuma and Ramaphosa were going.

Mantashe said Ramaphosa was dealing with a "complex situation", however, officials were agreed on the "end game". And because our people want this matter to be finalised, the NEC will be doing exactly that.

"If there ever was a time when we should be working together, this water crisis is the time", he said.

"South Africans must appreciate that the leadership of the ANC is hard at work".

Opposition parties are calling for a parliamentary vote of no-confidence within days.

Steenhuisen said uncertainty was bad for the country and disruptive for the business of Parliament, where the Speaker this week took the extraordinary step of postponing the president's annual State of the Nation address to allow the ANC to settle its leadership battle.

The timing and circumstances of the early exit of Zuma, who is under intense pressure to resign, pose a challenge for the party that was the main anti-apartheid movement during white minority rule and has led South Africa since the first all-race elections in 1994.
