The code leaked onto GitHub claims to be designed for iOS 9 but much of it is likely to be found in iOS 11, making the leak potentially unsafe to Apple's mobile software.
Now what is the repercussions of the iBoot source code being leaked?
Motherboard asked Jonathan Levin - chief technology officer of software security firm Technologeeks and author of several books on the theme - what he thinks about the leak. Similar to a BIOS, iBoot is the part of iOS that performs a series of checks and initializations to ensure a trusted boot of the operating system. "This document may not be reproduced or transmitted in any form, in whole or in part, without the express written permission of Apple Inc". A key iPhone code has just been revealed, in what some are calling the biggest leak in history. However, as a precautionary measure, the company has removed the code from GitHub via a DMCA takedown notice. That employee was apparently encouraged by friends from the Jailbreaking community to pull source code and internal tools from Apple's servers.
Apple has now confirmed the code was real, but said the incident would not affect the security of its devices as it did not rely on secrecy around code to protect its devices.
Fortunately, numerous risks associated with the leak have been mitigated.
Those contacts told the tech publication that the intern didn't have it out for Apple because of personal gripes, but rather that they convinced him to in order to contribute to security research they had been conducting. Now, in a rather unexpected twist, the publication says that the sensitive code was actually first leaked by an Apple intern. According to Motherboard, it was down to a "low-level Apple employee" who worked at the company in 2016, around the time of iOS 9.
As noted by Ars Technica, it's possible that the jailbreaking community could use the code to develop new methods of breaking Apple's built-in restrictions on how their phones are used, though security experts say much of the relevant information was already known.
The code has since popped up on other sites, which could give hackers a peak into the inner workings of Apple's iBoot software.
'In terms of end users, this doesn't really mean anything positive or negative, ' security researcher Will Strafach TechCrunch.
