  • Winter storm leaves deadly mark on the Midwest

Winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for parts of northwest OH, southern Lower Michigan, northern IN, northern IL, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa, where show is expected to be the heaviest.

Chicago's metropolitan area was blanketed with its heaviest snowfall since at least late 2016 as the storm put an icy grip on much of Wisconsin, northern IL and MI. A 33-year-old woman also died after a multi-vehicle crash on Friday near Fenton, Michigan, located south of Flint, Fenton police said.

"Ingham Co.is saying that 4-7" is a pretty good bet for northern parts of the county with heavier amounts in the southern half, which could see 5-9", maybe even 10 plus inches.

The National Weather Service said heavy snow is forecast to move into upstate NY and New England by early Saturday, Reuters reported.

The Des Moines Register reported that three to seven inches of snow fell in northern Iowa Friday morning. Chicago was forecast to receive between 6 and 12 inches.

Chicago Public Schools and hundreds of other schools in the region all closed Friday because of the storm, and Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport announced that cancelation of hundreds of flights, per the Tribune.

By early Friday, more than 100 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.

Snow from a winter storm moving across the Great Lakes is leaving roads treacherous, closing schools and cancelling hundreds of flights across the upper Midwest.

The storm dropped up to 9 inches of snow in some places, with more to come, and is the largest to hit the Midwest this winter.

Some of the highest totals are forecast in northern IL, including the Chicago area, as well as northern in and southern MI.

A powerful winter storm slammed the Midwest on Friday, blanketing cities in snow and causing a number of school cancellations.

Early Friday, the National Weather Service received reports of 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow in northern IL. The Chicago area absorbed six inches of snow with another four inches in Milwaukee and up to two inches in Detroit, the broadcaster said.

Meteorologist Heather Orow in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said Friday morning the storm is "generally going to be an issue for travel". People should stay off the roads if possible and expect delays and hazardous conditions.

American, United and Southwest airlines warned travelers to expect more flight cancellations to and from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

"It's too early quite yet to call it over", Chicago weather service meteorologist Todd Kluber said. Schools across Nebraska and Iowa also closed or delayed the start of classes.
