Six Nations: Ulster stars named in Ireland squad to face Italy

  • Jack Conan 'The last few months have gone great for me'

Schmidt has named the 20-year-old on the bench for Saturday's NatWest 6 Nations clash against Italy in Dublin.

Livewire Leinster back Jordan Larmour will not need his hand held through his Test match debut, according to Ireland boss Joe Schmidt.

The Eastern Province can replace the Scarlets at the top their conference, if they beat Edinburgh in Scotland.

"He has an expectation that he'll look after himself and look after what he needs to do and bring those exciting elements I talked about to the game".

The starting backline is unchanged from the dramatic win in Paris as last-gasp drop-goal hero Johnny Sexton again starts at fly-half despite earlier speculation that the British & Irish Lions star could be rested for the visit of the Italians.

"So would that have been the best preparation for the next game?" We want to get out there and score tries and past year the number of tries was fantastic.

Andrew Porter may get his first taste of Six Nations action too, off the bench, despite the strong replacement showing of Munster's John Ryan last weekend. Leavy takes the place of Josh Van der Flier in the backrow, while Conan comes in for CJ Stander.

"Some of it is mileage". CJ Stander, the Munster No 8, makes way for Conan, although it is clear that Schmidt's thinking is based on a long-term strategy. "I think we have added some guys who can potentially help us do that and at the same time we try to have a focus on doing some things really well that will inevitably lead to opportunities where we can score points".
