Maduro gears up for six more years as Venezuela election date set

  • Venezuelan Govt. Ready To Sign Agreement With Opposition

Maduro, a 55-year old former bus driver and union leader who has been president since 2013, appeared on Wednesday evening in front of a cheering crowd, who sang his campaign jingle, "Everyone with Maduro!"

Venezuela's ruling socialists had previously said a vote would be held before the end of April, with Maduro running despite his widespread unpopularity and a crushing economic crisis in the oil-rich nation.

"Given the decision of Venezuelan electoral authorities to call a snap election for April 22, which does not warrant a fair, free, transparent and democratic process, the Peruvian government has invited Lima Group member countries to meet this Tuesday, February 13, in the Peruvian capital, to evaluate measures to respond to the Venezuelan political situation", it said.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced Wednesday the holding of early presidential elections on April 22, in which president Nicolas Maduro assures he will win reelection until 2025, with or without opposition, reported dpa news.

Nonetheless, president Maduro started his campaign activities for his re-election weeks ago.

Maduro's foes, who staged massive protests last year in an attempt to force early elections, say six more years of Maduro at the helm would spark a full-fledged humanitarian crisis and the utter destruction of Venezuela's economy.

On Jan. 26, Maduro had pledged to be "the president of Venezuelan youth and women" after announcing his candidacy for the forthcoming elections. The most popular figureheads are both unable to run; Henrique Capriles is barred from office while Leopoldo Lopez is under house arrest. By bringing the date forward by eight months the government has left the opposition in disarray.

Two opposition leaders, former President of the National Assembly Henry Ramos and ex-governor of Lara state Henri Falcon, have also announced presidential aspirations. The government, meanwhile, accused opposition leaders of taking orders from Washington to abort the talks.
