  • US Charges Dozens In Massive Cyberidentity Fraud Scheme

"Today's indictment and arrests mark one of the largest cyberfraud enterprise prosecutions ever undertaken by the Department of Justice", Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan said in a statement.

He is one of 36 suspects from across the globe indicted over their roles within the group, which is said to have committed "large-scale acquisition, sale and dissemination" of stolen identities, debit and credit cards and other sensitive information.

A USA federal indictment unsealed overnight charged 36 people for their alleged roles running the Infraud online forum. The Justice Department noted that other defendants remain at large and said the investigation is continuing.

Lower down were super moderators and moderators who served as subject-matter experts over specific topics or regions. Bondarenko allegedly founded Infraud in 2010.

A VIP member used the forum to gather information to "facilitate their criminal activities".

In terms of scale of money stolen and global reach, the DOJ said Infraud is among the biggest in the world.

USA investigators estimate the site's members meant to cause $2.2 billion worth of damage, but actual losses amounted to over $530 million.

The criminal group operated from an online forum, through which users could offer or buy illicit services, including malware capable of data breaches.

Among those arrested was Svyatoslav Bondarenko, a 34-year-old Ukrainian national and the mastermind behind the site.

The Infraud Organization, according to prosecutors, coordinated various flavors of internet fraud including identity theft, bank fraud, wire fraud, and related computer crimes through online forums.

U.S. authorities have indicted 36 people for stealing more than $530 million from victims across the world in one of the "largest cyberfraud enterprises ever prosecuted".

"This case reflects the alarming and increasing threat posed by cyber crime".

The collaring of just over a third of the group's leadership involved agents from the US Department of Homeland Security working in junction with law enforcement agencies in Albania, Australia, France, Kosovo, Italy, Serbia, and the United Kingdom.
