  • John Mahoney

Though best known for portraying Grammer's fictitious father on the highbrow sitcom, Mahoney had a long and illustrious career as an actor on the stage and screen.

Mahoney was 77 years old and was reportedly in hospice care at the time of his passing, though there are no details on his cause of death.

John Mahoney appears on the set of the final episode of "Frasier" in 2004 in Los Angeles.

Martin's beloved dog, Eddie, also took up residence to annoy the fussy Frasier.

The humble actor Mahoney, once said he misses theatre and wouldn't regret anything if he never came on camera again. That's where his pregnant mother had been evacuated for safety from Nazi attacks, but the family soon returned to its home in Manchester. His ambition to act was fuelled by performances with Stretford children's theatre, including playing Polonius in Hamlet when he was 12.

One sister, who moved to the Midwest after marrying a US sailor, was responsible for Mahoney's decision to make his life in America.

Mahoney moved to the United States as a young man when his older sister, Vera, a war bride living in rural IL, agreed to sponsor him. For some years, he was also the editor of a medical journal.

In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his role in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves. He starred in "Prelude to a Kiss" on Broadway and various Steppenwolf productions, including "The Birthday Party" and "The Rembrandt".

Later, he played Walter Barnett, a business executive prone to panic attacks who consults Gabriel Byrne's psychologist during the second series (2009) of the drama In Treatment.

Mahoney's recent TV credits included a recurring role as Betty White's love interest on "Hot in Cleveland" and a 2015 guest appearance on "Foyle's War".

In movies, Mahoney earned recognition in Tin Men in 1987 alongside Richard Dreyfuss.

While filming, emotions could run high between Mahoney and Grammer, who had been estranged from his real father.
