FIRST REVIEW: Black Panther makes Marvel matter all over again

  • Chadwick Boseman & Ryan Coogler Talk Making History With Black Panther

Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life. The PG-13-rated "Black Panther", writes IGN's Jim Vejvoda, nails the trifecta as "an adventure film, a political statement and a cultural celebration". But somewhere along the line, that changed - probably starting with Shane Black's brilliant Iron Man 3, and even further with Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and even further again with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Black Panther also stars Lupita Nyong'o and Michael B Jordon and Ryan Coogler.

Chadwick Boseman, whose role in the film Black Panther is that of a leader and superhero, says leaders are often "misunderstood".

The average rating for Black Panther right now is an 8.6/10, while Thor: Ragnarok's score was 7.5/10 and Spider-Man: Homecoming's score was 7.7/10 in comparison.

The actor got his break after a decade as an obscure television and indie film actor when Marvel came calling in 2014 with a lucrative five-picture deal to play Black Panther.

Critics are also hailing how "Black Panther" tackles complex themes while still maintaining its sense of high action. In his struggles, he is flanked by his tech-wizard sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), right-hand warrior woman Okoye (Danai Gurira), proud mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and supportive ex-girlfriend Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o).

Blade notwithstanding, this is the first time an African comic book character from the big two comics publishers has had a standalone movie funded by a major studio.

Because make no mistake, with a predominantly African-American cast in tow, Black Panther is a powerful, diverse, and timely addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we now have confirmation that it'll run for 134 minutes. After a brief glimpse in the Civil War post-credits, we finally get to see the kingdom in all its glory; a wondrous, Afrofuturist land of technology and rich, unhindered culture thriving in modern times, though kept secret from the world. Black Panther was was the first Stan Lee hero of African descent featured in the Fantastic Four comic in 1966, ; T'Challa (aka the Black Panther), was king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. T'Challa is surrounded by friends, family, and rivals, each so charming and entertaining they're constantly stealing scenes from each other. Both of the scenes are revealed in the trailer, so nothing is being spoiled here-they just happen to be the best fight scenes in the film. "So I'd be really interested to see, you know, what kind of king he is with experience and how that affects his performance in the stories". But he'll need more than combat skills in a globe-trotting plot that begins in London, where Age of Ultron mercenary Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis, having a ball) steals a Vibranium artefact.

Luckily for fans of Michael B. Jordan physique, he's continuing his hard work to shoot Creed 2.
